Flaviu Rogojan - Untitled (Space), 2013 - site-specific installation

Untitled (Space) is an installation about spaces. The exhibition space, whether in its gallery or museum form (or other hybrid or alternative variants) is a somewhat utopian category of space, a kind of enacted utopia in that it serves the purpose of providing an escape from the mundane and a gateway to the almost surreal art-world. It is in this space that the artist nudges in a different spacial species: the technical territory, the non-art-space, a place void of content. The installation provides the enclosure and confinement of this void and at the same time encloses and separates the rest of the gallery floor. Even though the installation is barely visible, blending in with the gallery walls, the effect is felt throughout the exhibition. The act of drawing a line down the middle invariably categorizes the other works present in the show, adding and subtracting meanings and relationships. The artist’s intervention is then undifferentiated from the curators intervention. Untitled (Space) purposefully blurs the line between curatorial, design, and artistic decision making as a subtle critique to stiff and conventional art-world roles.
